Happy Baba Marta!

Elizabeth would like to wish everyone a very Happy Baba Marta!

For those of you who don't know, Baba Marta (or Grandma March) is a major Bulgarian holiday. There are many legends about its origin, but it is basically a celebration of the coming spring. Beginning on March 1st, and lasting throughout the month of March, Bulgarians wear "Martenitsas" (red and white threads) in honor of the holiday.

Each year Vassil's family in Bulgaria (aunts, cousins, etc.), send us new Martenitzas to wear in celebration. This year was particularly special, as Elizabeth received a Martenitza of her own (thanks to Lelia Vili). And as you can see, she very much enjoyed wearing (and slobbering) on it!

As she grows up, it will be fun to teach her all about this important Bulgarian holiday!

Here is a website with more information about Baba Marta, in case you are interested: http://www.abvg.net/Traditions/Marta/Marta.html

ENJOY!
